Collagraphs are a form of contemporary art printing that emphasizes artistic expression over reproducibility; the texture of the collagraph plate will dictate how it prints.
For this limited edition print, Glaze Calculation, fired decayed granite was mixed with a transparent ink, applied to a collagraph plate and removed from the upper surfaces of the plate. Natural and hand-coloured Thai kozo papers were then placed over the inked plate and passed through a high-pressure etching press (or in this case, a slab roller) to transfer the ink from plate to paper to create the image, resulting in an intaglio print.
After drying, the print was run through the press a second time, to adhere the translucent Thai kozo to Italian Fabriano paper, using the chine collé method. The print was then embossed with the Driving Creek Pottery logo designed by Barry Brickell, signed, titled and numbered, most with the designation ‘1/1’ showing that no two prints are identical, though many of the same elements may be present. Instead of printing editions, I make distinct prints from my plates, with different inking processes or chine collé applied.
