Clepsydra, 2022
Collagraph print, ink, sugar, wax, water, wood, perspex, light
1200 x 1200 x 400mm

Clepsydra is a time-based sculpture which was exhibited as part of “Time Lapsed” at MIGHT COULD. It is based on one of the oldest time-keeping instruments, a water clock, or clepsydra. It is also referred to as a klepsydra, translated literally to “water thief”.

In my version, 256 faint blue cups cast from sugar and wax float on back-lit water in a grid-like form. Over two months, the water makes its way through the wax to either melt or crystalise the sugar. As time passes, cups appear untouched, have totally melted away (sweetening the water), or have crystalised to look like something reminiscent of a micro rock pool. Day by day the piece changed.
